[opensuse-amd64] 4GB memory problem with OpenSuSe 10.2
Hello, I have got a PC based on GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 motherboard (Intel P965 chipset, Core 2 Duo CPU) with 4GB memory. There are two problems with it: 1. OpenSuSe 10.2 x86-64 hangs during boot process with message "agpgart: detected an Intel 965G chipset". I managed to work around this problem by specifying mem=4096M boot option. 2. After the system has started, it reports that there is just 3.43Gb memory available. I was not able to find any options in BIOS related to memory hole remapping. Anyway, Windows XP x64 sees 4094 Megabytes. Is there any way to allow Linux to see all 4Gb of memory? With best regards, P. Hmm, I thought we had a fix for the AGP hang in the update kernel, but I can't find it now. Will probably be fixed in a future update kernel. Alternatively you can boot with agp=off, but then the integrated graphics might not work. -Andi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

Thanks a lot! I do not have an integrated graphics card, so agp=off works perfectly! With best regards, P. Dear Andi, Just for information: it still does not work with 2.6.20 kernel. With best regards, P. Trifonov

Dear Andi,
Just for information: it still does not work with 2.6.20 kernel.
The patch went in post 2.6.20 I think. And there has been recently another one. Anyways I added the first one to the Kernel-of-the-day for 10.2. Can you please try the latest rpm at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/10.2-x86_64/SL102_BRANCH/ (without agp=off) -Andi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

Unfortunately I cannot downgrade to 2.6.18 kernel due to some hardware problems (see http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdev&m=117553933617917&w=2 ). With best regards, P. So why did you report a 10.2 kernel problem when you don't even run a 10.2 kernel? -Andi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

Dear Andi, problem. After employing the "agp=off" option I was able to boot the system. After some time I discovered that the network card driver is non-reliable. I was suggested to take 2.6.20 kernel. Marvell NIC works perfectly with 2.6.20 kernel, but I still have to use "agp=off" option to boot the system. With best regards, P. I was not able to find any options in BIOS related to memory hole remapping ... and ask Gigabyte if you don't see the corresponding BIOS option (I assume you use latest BIOS version).
