Hi all, I've fallen the kernel back to 2.6.4-54.5-default to see how it differs from 2.6.5-7.61cvs20040528150002-default. Results below. In sum: o GluCat segfaults with 2.6.4 but not 2.6.5. o Antialiasing works properly with 2.6.4 but not 2.6.5 (? huh?). o 32-bit libraries don't work with either. I will next try Andreas Jaeger's recommended 2.6.5 AMD64 Linux kernel. Best regards leopardi@linfinit:~> uname -a Linux linfinit 2.6.4-54.5-default #1 Fri May 7 16:47:49 UTC 2004 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux On Tuesday 01 June 2004 00:33, Paul C. Leopardi wrote:

[Stability problems have so far disappeared with 2.6.5 kernel. No longer need "noapic agp=off acpi=off apm=off".] Still seems stable with 2.6.4-54.5-default kernel.
2. Display blinking and shuddering in framebuffer mode during bootup. [This seems to have stopped after I updated the kernel to 2.6.5.] Has so far not happened with 2.6.4-54.5-default.

Anti-aliasing seems rougher than it was with SuSE 9.0. This could be because I am not yet running the nVIDIA graphics driver. Maybe sub-pixel hinting does not work in XFree86 4.3.99? After falling back to 2.6.4-54.5-default, rebooting, and running SuSEconfig, antialiasing has improved. Coincidence? A side effect of running SuSEconfig?
Testing the segfault problems with GluCat.
GluCat still segfaulted with kernel 2.6.4-54.5. GluCat still segfaults with 2.6.4-54.5-default.
32-bit software.
Maple will not install. Matlab will not run. This is a showstopper, but I will try to fix it, if possible, rather than revert to SuSE 9.0. Still a problem. Matlab X11 installation works, if SuSE 9.1 32-bit libraries are used. Matlab will not run. With SuSE 9.1 32-bit libraries, it asks for the Documentation CD, even when it is in the drive and mounted (is this a problem with submount?). With SuSE 9.0 32-bit libraries, Matlab segfaults. Maple installation still does not work. With SuSE 9.1 32-bit libraries, it gives an incompatibility message. With SuSE 9.0 32-bit libraries, it segfaults.
Other oddities so far.
Sometimes Konqueror response seems sluggish for no apparent reason, eg. CPU usage is low. Not see with 2.6.4-54.5-default.

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, on a Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP motherboard, which uses the NVIDIA nForce3 150, plus an MSI FX5700-TD AGP graphics card, which uses the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700.
