I find that serial UART devices, whether ftdi based or pl2303 based, will hang the system (responds to nothing but reset) if I hot-plug the port in. There seems to be no trouble if the device is plugged in before booting, but if I hotplug additional ports, or unplug and replug, one of the hotplugs will crash the system.
I'm running SuSE 9.2 x86_64 on a dual-processor HDAMB system that is otherwise stable.
Yes the pl2303 driver is a bit flakey in older release. 10.1 will hopefully have that fixed. Or just don't hotplug it. -Andi
