Dear list, I have an Opteron server here! It has an Mustek PowerMust 1000 USB UPS attached. Unfortunately I do not know how to activate powermanagement! I tried from the yast but I see no battery icon as I see on a laptop! What should I do?
A UPS is not the same as a laptop battery. It is a different concept. One lets your notebook run for hours, the other is just an emergency power allowing you to survive short power interruptions, or to shut down your system safely in case the regular power stays off more than a few minutes.
Further going to power control in control center pressing the "laptop battery" I get the following message: in the second, third, ... tab of the dialog box that appears:
Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation. ACPI was probably enabl ed, but some of the sub-options were not - you need to enable at least 'AC Adapt or' and 'Control Method Battery' and then rebuild your kernel.
Now the questions are: 1) how to activate battery indicator? 2) how to instruct the powersave daemon to shut down the system when power supply is off? 3) Is there a way that the machine boots automatically when power is on again and then a script runs which will continue a broken simulation?
How is your UPS connected to the server? Do you have the power connection only? If yes, how do you think the server can get any info if the power from the powerline is coming from UPS battery or from your friendly neighborhood nuclear power plant? You need besides the powerline a connection between server and UPS. Usually that is a serial cable connection. Then you need some software to use the info coming from that connection. It is certainly not the notebook powersave stuff, which is meant for notebooks running for hours from their built in battery. Note that cheaper USBs do not have such a serial connection to signal their status to the server
TO make it simpler I am running a simulation and electricity is off suddenly. Then I want my UPS to instruct my Server to shut-down. If Electricity is on again then I want my UPS to boot my Server and when the server finally boots then I want a script to run automatically which will continue the simulation which was interrupted!
Any ideas?
