Hi, I've had that very same problem with any self-compiled 2.4 kernel under SuSE 8.2-AMD64. No trouble at all booting with a self-compiled 2.6-kernel though. Martin On Thu, 2003-09-11 at 20:56, Andreas Jaeger wrote:

Hi,
we recently got an Ibm eserver 325 with two Amd 242 and 2 GB ram (4x512MB in recommended slots according to the documentation) for testing purposes, and tried to install 8.2 beta 9.
We face the same problem that was exposed on the list some time ago (Aug 1st) :
After having read the 1st CD, the system tries to reboot, before reading other CDs.
This is normal.
But the machine never goes so far. We end with an empty screen just after 'Loading linux.............' (lilo display).
And then it uses the SMP kernel and seems to fail.
We tried too with failsafe, and end with the same message :
Starting kswapd bigpage subsystem: allocated 0 bigpages (=0MB)
Same thing with grub.
Does anybody encountered the same problem, or have an idea about what is going on ?
No, not directly.
You could try to use the rescue system to install the latest kernel From ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86-64/supplementary/Kernel and see whether installation continues after that,
