I'm still fighting with my Suse 9.1 installation. In the meantime I have reinstalled suse9.1_amd64 using the VT8237 SATA controller (Promise controller disabled in BIOS). Despite having removed sata_via from initrd, the module is still loaded and I still get (mostly non-freezing) kernel oopses. Upgrading to mantel's kotd 2.6.5-7.47cvs20040522151816-default has apparently improved stability somewhat (less of the Oopse shown below).
My strong recommendation: Update your BIOS! I had serious trouble with my S-ATA HDD and system stability on my MSI K8T Neo, and after updating everything (especially the firmware for the VIA S-ATA controller) it now runs perfectly smooth, no hangs, no corrupted files. Someone on this list also mentioned problems, he also updated everything, now he also has a system running without problems ;) HTH Andy
