openSUSE 11.4 PromoDVDs coming soonish - Organizing Country Coordination
PromoDVDs of openSUSE 11.4 will soon be available. In the past we had a few ambassadors that distributed them on demand to folks in their country like Sankar P (is there a wiki page for this?). Sankar, could you tell us a bit what you did so that others know what this means, please? If you're interested in handling PromoDVDs for your region, please speak up. Till now, I've been handing out the downloaded DVD, which looks a bit unpleasant, especially without a label. So it would probably make more sense asking for the promoDVD. However, if I understand correctly, due to the space taken out by the live images, the promoDVD has fewer packages than the DVD download. With high bandwidth in this part of the world, anyone can really download extra packages as needed. However in many places, India, for example, that is difficult, as well as costly. So if it was possible to supply Ambassadors/Marketing with the option of promoDVD or normal DVD, to use as they deem fit, or a combination of both, maybe people could be helped better. A typical person who'd prefer a larger software collection to a live image, would be the computer science high school or college freshman, who is interested enough in openSUSE to install it, but has limited bandwidth available to spend on downloads. Also FOSS events with ex openSUSErs who want back in. My personal requirement I'll send off-list with my mailing address.

Sorry, I'm not taking orders for 11.4 - and will not take them anymore via email, it's too errorprone. We're setting up a small web page and I'll announce once I can take orders. Sending out 30.000 DVDs needs a process that scales so that each of you gets the DVDs in time - thus the new website. Handling emails like we did in the past just does not scale anymore. For now, please don't ask for PromoDVDs, I will answer all those emails eventually with a friendly: Please wait... The PromoDVD misses mainly development packages. Handling of two different DVDs makes the process at the moment to complicated, it will not scale properly, I speak from experience when I had to handle three different media, it was a nightmare for shipping. Maybe in the future if we find better ways of handling the shipment but not for now. Btw we get a good discount, the more DVDs we order, so creating two will cost us more than just one... Andreas, If it's possible to ship me a few (10-20) to have a small stock for people who might call for them, I don't mind having a few at hand. Shipping costs in Portugal aren't really that expensive, so I'll cover those from my own funds to ship them when required. In July we're going to organize a small event in Universidade Fernando Pessoa (Porto) and we're aiming for 100+ people, so by that time, a few months before I'll inform the list on much I could eventually need. We're currently looking for 1 or 2 speakers more, hopefully technical speakers who can do a talk that somehow can be of interest to IT students. I'm only looking for national speakers (because we're running without funds), once we have a go from a few people, I'll set the date with João (another portuguese contributor) and with the University, and then I bring this to the list. Just as a heads up. Not really an issue the number of packages and all of that, as we have state of art internet connectivity up to 1Gigabit available for nearly everyone and 68%+ of national residents have broadband connections. Hi ! I am from Bangladesh and we are trying to form an openSUSE community here along with the other Linux users. I think some promo DVD 's will be very much helpful for us. The main problem in our country is poor internet speed. It is very hard to find users who have internet speed greater than 256K . So it is difficult for most of our users to download the DVD. We the members of openSUSE Bangladesh try to help as much as possible. If we get promo DVD 's i think that will be more helpful for us. Sure of course and I can co-ordiante with Roger when possible, Roger where abouts in the UK are you based? Are there any main events occuring in the UK? I try to attend computer markets every sunday but to be honest, more people seem interested online, than do at the markets themselves. les groups non conventionel to me translates as non conventional groups but i am still unsure as to the context in which your using it and as such suspect there is a different way to express it which buy would make more sense. I attend computer trade shows, where local computer traders sell their stock in sports halls. I attend different shows from different companies each week, I have a number of posters I have been handing out, I have also been using the comunity posters as well as those I have obtained from the net generally promoting linux, I have two computers both online demonstrating the running installation. Most people stick with "I use windows and I am not bothered" or "I am an ubuntu user so already use linux" there are usually genuinly interested people but usually there is some lack of software namely equivelent to Adobe Suite that for them is a show stopper. I remember a topic in multimedia regarding Recording Video and Cinelerra for them this is just something they require, for this reason they continue with windows. There are clear areas where linux is loosing the battle and these need to be addressed. -- Kind Regards Stuart Tanner Bolton Linux 24 Vincent Street Bolton BL1 4SA Tel: +44(0)1204 410474 Mob: +44(0)7868 028028 www.bolin.org.uk Distributing openSUSE in the UK Registered Linux User: 529825 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+help@opensuse.org

No he didn't get any Live CD's yet simply because they don't exist yet. :-) The LiveCD's will be pressed as soon as we have GNOME3 stabilized in our repositories, and GNOME3 isn't officially released until April 6. So it may very well be not until the end of the month before pressed CDs will be available. However, an ISO will be available online (stay tuned for that announcement) as soon as it is vetted and ready to go. You all can burn those ISOs. I should point out however that we will not be shipping out LiveCDs to Ambassadors or anyone else. They will be shipped directly to the GNOME Foundation for them to distribute at their events. (The same practice also for the KDE e.V. group.) For the rest of us, we stick with the PromoDVDs, which are ready now for distribution if you need to request them. Hi, First of all sorry for the delay in reply. I didn't check mails during the weekend.
The process that I followed was very simple and won't scale for such a large scale. I maintain(ed) a list of addresses to which I ship the DVDs within India. In addition to that, if anyone asks in marketing or ambassadors lists from India (and once to Bangladesh also iirc), I reply on the list and add their address to my list. Once I get the bulk of DVDs from Jacqueline, I bulk-deliver to all the addresses in my list (asked-list + few other colleges, LUGs, twitter/facebook friends I know of) through Novell India delivery. This way, I don't have to pay for the individual shipments. While asking for DVDs from Germany, I get in a bulk so that for any subsequent requests from India, I can send the DVDs myself without having to ask from Germany (buffering). In my ambassador page, I had a text of: "If you need anything for openSUSE [DVDs or whatever] in India, feel free to mail me". This is the very simple process that I follow. Cyberorg does something similar in India but he prepares his own DVDs. Thanks for the info. Does the wiki contain any reference to this? If we have some people taking care of sending locally, how do people know about it? AFAIK, there is nothing in the wiki for this except the list of ambassadors in http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Ambassadors_list (can have obsolete data) I am not aware of anything on wiki for these. I often notice the package is more expensive than the dvd itself and the dvd if often damaged thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xgxog7_clip-l-ombre-et-la-lumiere-3-bad-pig... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGgv_ZFtV14 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+help@opensuse.org
What about giving our contacts and add them in http://software.opensuse.org/order/new ? So people from India contact Sankar and people from Greece contact me and so on, that way above sending them DVD we can propably go an make a Speach about openSUSE or something. Also it might be helpful for expanding and bonding local communities. Just a thought Kostas 2011/3/22 jdd <jdd@dodin.org>:
