call for an irc channel for ambassadors
Now that we have a mailing list, can we have a channel on freenode as well. I am calling for the creation of #opensuse-ambassadors -- ----------------------------------------- Discover it! Enjoy it! Not a bad idea, however, I'm already in a bunch of #opensuse-* channels hehe.. I guess one new one won't matter :) -Matt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+help@opensuse.org

Actually that's not quite right. It could "matter" because Freenode limits the number of channels you be connected to (I think the current limit is 20) so yeah adding one more could put you over the limit depending on how many channels you connect to now. But beyond that, I would strongly recommend that you all decide what real benefits you have with a separate Ambassador channel. I see no reason why it can't conduct its activities in either the -marketing channel or even the -project channel. This way more people see your activities and possibly join in. Otherwise, you end up running the risk of becoming segregated and isolated and I'm sure you want your Ambassador program to grow. Having more channels is additional administrative overhead for folks like Darix and before you even put that burden on him, you really need to step back and think and justify what real benefits an own channel gives you. Actually the number of channels you are limited to is now 120. That changed when they did the upgrade to ircd-seven -Matt -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+help@opensuse.org

Bryen, I run a ircd, so being an admin is ok for me. Plus my new job I can use irc, TCM didn't allow it so I don't mind being one of the admins for that chat, I can even work on get a bot set up as well. :-) -- ----------------------------------------- Discover it! That's good. But it still doesn't explain why we need an additional channel. You don't even know what the traffic is going to be like yet. Spreading people out to find even more channels to see what's going on in the Project just makes it even harder to attract more contributors in the long run. Multiple idle channels doesn't really improve things and makes it harder for those of us who are already involved in the Project to stay abreast of everything going on. I would really encourage everyone to think about waiting a while and first focus on building up ambassador conversations. If it becomes so high traffic that it actually disrupts other Project business, then consider getting a new channel. And Matt, thanks for the update re: increased number of channels allowed by Freenode. Wasn't aware of that. I would also propose to use #opensuse-marketing for now, it's idle most of the time and the extra chatter would be welcome. Or is there any specific reason not to wait a bit with that one?
