Hi ambassadors all people writing to Ambassadors Welcome Team to apply for ambassadors are really excited, some people though are even more excited(if that is possible). Johan Cabrera is one of them and my 'spider-sense' that we are going to see great things happening to Florida with openSUSE. So all please give a worm welcome our new ambassador from United States. Below you can learn more about him and his relationship with openSUSE as he told us in his own words. * What have you done already for openSUSE? Up to date I have helped give people and companies more exposure to openSUSE and its advantages since I started using it some years ago. During my time as a student in the University of Habana, Cuba, I became a Systems Administrator and was charged with transitioning the network from a Windows Server based infrastructure to Linux, which allowed me to introduce them to openSUSE, being that the distro of my choice for the servers and some client boxes. Since I started using openSUSE I have been a strong promoter and have spread the word about its advantages, including promoting it in my current hosting company, Mojohost (Easy Online Solutions - mojohost.com) in my role as Linux Systems Administrator. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you want to do the next 6 months. I have been looking for a more formal and resourceful way to promote what I consider is the most powerful Linux distribution, and from my current position as a Systems Administrator in South Florida, with multiple contacts in the industry and working in one of the main nodes in the region (The NAP of The Americas in Downtown Miami) I plan to organize new events and conferences regarding FOSS and openSUSE in specific and the advantages it presents for companies and individuals alike. I also own my own server and domains and can dedicate these resources to support and organize the openSUSE community in Florida, USA. This might be a great success since currently Florida does not count with a more organized local community as other states do, so there is a lot of work that can be done. I'm also bilingual, so I can contribute in any translation to and from Spanish needed and also allows me to reach the Spanish-speaking community down here in Florida. * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE? Like I stated above, I'm ready, I have some important resources available and I'm more than willing to start. * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE? I believe that many users do not realize the true power and versatility of openSUSE, to put some simple examples: openSUSE is a great Server distribution but at the same time is equally powerful and resourceful as a desktop OS, furthermore, it has the best hardware support I have ever seen in any Linux distro! It is unbelievable the amount of hardware that is supported straight out of the box and if it's not, it probably can be supported with a little work or with a third-party driver; this leaves many other distros as they were in the stone age. The package management is incredibly powerful as well as the amount of very good application available while keeping stability AND the latest possible versions of it; this is way more than many other distributions can offer, I sometimes can't believe how fast I can have something setup on openSUSE that would take me quite some work and time on CentOS or RedHat, it is sad that many administrators and companies are yet ignorant of these facts. * Why do you love to do this? This is part of my everyday work, and openSUSE has always been my distribution of choice and the one that has helped me with the most difficult jobs, I'm a big fan of it, even my workstation has a big openSUSE logo that I made by myself stuck to it! And guess what is the wallpaper on my computers and my phone? When I find such a good tool for my line of work, I just which that I could share it with everybody and that everybody could use it and appreciate it like I do. * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of experience? I started working with openSUSE since I was in middle school, on my desktop computer, using old 486 Intel processors when it was still "SuSE", even back then, it proved how powerful it could be even on such an old PC and with very low resources at my disposal (I was living in Cuba, so spare parts and financial resources were basically non-existent). Ever since, all computers on my possession use openSUSE (currently my workstations, my laptop and my server). From working on it in a desktop environment I started using it in my Systems Administrator role for servers in the University and have not stopped using it for both roles ever since, so I could say I have 12+ years working with it and extensive experience on its use. I'm currently training (and refreshing knowledge) on C language developing and I plan to start contributing to openSUSE on the development side soon. -- http://opensuse.gr http://amb.opensuse.gr http://own.opensuse.gr http://warlordfff.tk me I am not me ------- Time travel is possible, you just need to know the right aliens -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-ambassadors+help@opensuse.org
