Hi people, please give a warm welcome to Fernando Mejía, our new ambassador from Guatemala that just joined forces with us... Below you can learn more about him and his relationship with openSUSE. * What have you done already for openSUSE? Well I started promoting openSUSE since 2009 at the Latino-American free software installation festival called FLISOL here in Guatemala. I decide to do this because there were no local openSUSE lugs, only of other distros, so I thought it would be a good idea to promote openSUSE. Later on , for the event FLISOL 2010 I decided to start an opensuse LUG in order to promote more easily this distribution , when we started we define several communication ways: - mailing list : http://listas.slgt.org/listinfo.cgi/opensusegt-slgt.org -twitter:: opensusegt -identi.ca: opensusegt -facebook : opensusegt After that, several opensuse enthusiast joined the lug and we started working as a newborn community, although a very small one, and we managed to get a hosting to host our site , which is: http://www.opensuse.org.gt Later on, we started participating in several activities concerning free software here in Guatemala: -Linux parties -opensuse 11.3 launch party here in Guatemala - Free software encounters We also started promoting SUSEstudio, cause we thought that it has a lot of potential and it can be of great use for many. You can see proof of this activities in our social network users, and in our site, mostly I am the one who publishes articles in the site, my nick is feranto. * What are your plans for promoting openSUSE? Please tell us what you want to do the next 6 months. Well for the next 6 months our main focus would be in the following activities: -openSUSE 11.4 launch party, we are going to have some talks about openSUSE, openSUSE projects like OBS, SUSEstudio and smeegol, also and installation fest and give some openSUSE merchandise. -FLISOL 2011, this is one of the main events of the year , here we are going to collaborate with other local lugs to give talks, installation fest, spread the free software ideals, and sharing with other communities. That would be our main events por the next 6 months. * Are you ready to start promoting openSUSE? I think I'm ready to do so, and to be an official ambassador. * What do you think is the best kept secret of openSUSE? Well I guess I would have to say the Christmas GRUB, its really awesome. And only openSUSE users know about it. * Why do you love to do this? Because I think it's an ethic and moral path, to share with others something that has worked for me and I think would be useful for them, without charging them and under the ideals of free software. * How did you start with with Linux/openSUSE? What is your level of experience? Well I'm a software egineering student here in Guatemala at the University of San Carlos, this is my last year. And I started with GNU/Linux because of software proyects I had to develop, my first one was to setup a website using java servlets and JSP on a GNU/Linux system, so I had to install tomcat, jdk, netbeans and other tools in my 10.3 openSUSE that time. Since then I've been in openSUSE with tools like: - QT 4.1 -gcc, g++, flex, bison, -java , jlex, java_cup, java3d ,jdom -ruby, rails 3.0 -graphviz -mysql, postgres, db2-express c, oracle 11g -gns3 -subversion, git, track, mantis -xen, qemu, kvm, virtualbox -php 5, apache2 , -latex, blender, inkscape -nmap, macchanger, wireshark, ndiswrapper -samba, raid using partitioner I've been using opensuse for a lot of purposes, but actually I haven't developed any packages for it, or resolved any bugs concerning it. Altough I would love to start. I hope it gives you an Idea of my level. Thank you very much for your time, I agree your terms, and would be very glad to be officially an opensuse ambassador.
