just to give a feedback for now:
- will try further,
- but at the moment I am in a dead end, because (back to FreeBSD...):
   - I found out: because I used the FreeBSD-normal "make install 
clean" in one command ,
     I missed a warning message from make,

     when I afterwards deleted the "work" directory and ran "make" 
alone , I got the warning:
    "WARNING: Cannot build the rhd_conntest programm due to missing 
dependancies.
    *IF* you want to build rhd_conntest, install development packages 
of both pciutils
    and zlib/libz and re-run the configure (or autogen) script"
   - installing both pciutils and zlib/libz did not help, and special 
development versions
     are not available for current and stable FreeBSD 7.0 according to 
www.freebsd.org
