Not when they die. It is maybe cheaper to use an UPS than replace the laptop battery ;-) I have a home server that is in fact a good but old laptop, without battery, connected to the same ups as the router, tv recorder, and phone. Of course, maybe it would be better to use dc-dc converters for each of those gadgets, plus a 12-24 volt battery on float charger, plus a solar panel.
