I just want to browse _files_, of which some are pictures, some are PDFs

Then use a quicker viewer than gwenview or keep the viewers in memory, as
konqueror did – otherwise it would not have been quicker in loading. As
mentioned, dolphin has a different philosophy and is not meant as konqueror2.
Maybe krusader or any of all the other apps at your choice fit your needs.

Er, Sven, Konqueror did what Per was asking for by using an EMBEDDED
VIEWER, **NOT** a faster loading external viewer.

And this isn't about "konqueror2".
Yes, Dolphin has a different philosophy.
Its clear that it is meant to be ONLY a file manager.
It says so at the KDE site - http://dolphin.kde.org/

Perhaps you'd care to point out to us what advantage Dolphin has a file
manager over Konqueror as a file manager?

I ask that because I see on the web site such things as "... This
approach allows to optimize the user interface for the task of file
management." But I don't see how. I don't see any advantage - and yes
I tried using Dolphin as a file manager to the exclusion of Konqueror
for about 2 weeks and went back because I was getting frustrated.
