Lars,

        So far testing with Samba 3.3.2-2.1-2089-SUSE-SL10.3 on x86_64 looks
promising. I have started/stopped the server 3 times thus far and no CIFS
failure to unmount. I'm not saying that the problem is fixed because I could go
for a few days without the hang, but thus far my last CIFS effors on the client
were in syslog were before the install of 3.3.2:

Mar 31 02:07:30 alchemy kernel:  CIFS VFS: server not responding

        Also, just in case I wanted to build 3.3.3 from the source and spec 
file,
where can I get a copy of ldapsmb-1.34b.tar.bz2?
