So you have the new kernel-source package installed but are still running the
old kernel. Either you didn't reboot after updating the kernel, or you kept
the old one around and didn't select the new kernel when you rebooted
Solution: reboot and make sure you're booting the updated kernel

i would appreciate a nudge in the right direction that will help me
align my kernel, kernel source, and utsrelease.h
What exactly do you mean by "align"?
i am using the default kernel because i cannot use the pae kernel
which was the loader's first choice
here are the relevant bits; let me know if more is needed
tia
dt:~ # cat /usr/src/linux/include/linux/utsrelease.h
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.6.27.19-9-default"
dt:~ # uname -r
2.6.27.7-9-default
