We've been having some interesting discussions over on the factory mailing list, and it was pointed out that maybe we were ignoring the regular users, so I figured I'd give it a shot and see how things have been going for those using KDE in openSUSE 11.0.
General questions I have for you are:
1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x?
V3.x Tried V4 and didn't like it. I don't like the feel or the way it acts. I hate to say it, but it reminds me of Vista, and well, we all know where that will go.
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse?
Worse than 3, better than Gnome.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation?
Yes.. Somewhere better, but still can't get used to widgets. I mean, what the heck is a widget? I don't want to spend hours trying to get it to work so I reverted to V3.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
KDE4 is a re-write, and I understand that. But someone somewhere is trying to imitate Vista as far as I'm concerned. I want functionality, not pretty stuff that I have to work at to configure. It also isn't a drop in upgrade. Kmailrc from Version 3 doesn't work in 4. Tried several times, and never got it to pick up the filters.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
I like the look and feel of KDE3. I'm used to it, I know how it works. Eventually I know I'll have to update to KDE4, but that will probably be somewhere around 4.5, or later. I'll suffer with kde3 in suse 11 for a while longer. Probably until end of life. As for KDE4, it's pretty. That's about all I can say about it. But AFAIC pretty doesn't cut it. It's kind of like html email. Look good, but takes up more space that is needed. I really haven't played with KDE4 to see if it can be "dumbed" down. Now, I do have all the necessary hardware to run compiz, and all the pretty stuff. I just don't need it. A simple graphic screen is fine for me. And because I'm used to KDE3 that's what I'll use for as long as I can.
