[opensuse] KDE users - What has been your experience with KDE in openSUSE 11.0?
We've been having some interesting discussions over on the factory mailing list, and it was pointed out that maybe we were ignoring the regular users, so I figured I'd give it a shot and see how things have been going for those using KDE in openSUSE 11.0. General questions I have for you are: 1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x? 2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse? 3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation? 4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses? 5. General questions I have for you are:
1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x? 4.x
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse? Don't care about the comparisons. I'm keeping up with the Joneses. Seriously, it is different from KDE3. The devs have made considerable progress from the 4.0 days to 4.1.x. I'm loving it everyday. I don't use GNOME and nor will I.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation? Yes, I am using the 4.1.x build from factory.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses? The reason I moved to opennSUSE was because of the fact that I could run both KDE3 & KDE4 simultaneously. For me, it has totally replaced KDE3 and I'm not looking back.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it? KDE4, this is the future and I am on board. The apps being ported over, bug being fixed, that would improve it for me.

V3.x Tried V4 and didn't like it. I don't like the feel or the way it acts. I hate to say it, but it reminds me of Vista, and well, we all know where that will go.
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse?
Worse than 3, better than Gnome.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation?
Yes.. Somewhere better, but still can't get used to widgets. I mean, what the heck is a widget? I don't want to spend hours trying to get it to work so I reverted to V3.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
KDE4 is a re-write, and I understand that. But someone somewhere is trying to imitate Vista as far as I'm concerned. I want functionality, not pretty stuff that I have to work at to configure. It also isn't a drop in upgrade. Kmailrc from Version 3 doesn't work in 4. Tried several times, and never got it to pick up the filters.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
I like the look and feel of KDE3. I'm used to it, I know how it works. Eventually I know I'll have to update to KDE4, but that will probably be somewhere around 4.5, or later. I'll suffer with kde3 in suse 11 for a while longer. Probably until end of life. As for KDE4, it's pretty. That's about all I can say about it. But AFAIC pretty doesn't cut it. It's kind of like html email. Look good, but takes up more space that is needed. I really haven't played with KDE4 to see if it can be "dumbed" down. Now, I do have all the necessary hardware to run compiz, and all the pretty stuff. I just don't need it. A simple graphic screen is fine for me. And because I'm used to KDE3 that's what I'll use for as long as I can. 1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x?
KDE4.1.x
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse?
KDE4 is considerably worse than KDE3.x, but still better than Gnome.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation?
I update almost daily to Factory KDE4.1.x.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
In it's current state KDE4.x is NOT a good replacement for KDE3.5.x. Eventually I would expect it to be, but not for quite some time. There are way too many little fiddly things not quite right... you cannot put files on the desktop, you cannot add files correctly to the Favorites menu, the widget infrastructure is incomplete and often broken, there are too many missing features. It is not a valid replacement for KDE3.5 in any way for the average user. For the brave and experienced, it's fine as long as those using it are OK with it being a bit of a mess. It is NOT something a new user should be confronted with, and as much as I like using KDE4.x, it is NOT and WILL NOT be ready for openSUSE 11.1 (as the sole KDE version). I fully support where KDE4 is going, but it has such a long way to go that... well... it's hard some days not to simply install KDE 3.5.9 and be done with it.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
I am kind of mixed feelings after several months of using KDE4.x. KDE3.5 is much much better overall. It works, it's rock solid etc. KDE4.x is unfinished, unstable, and messy. It is improving, but... slowly. The list of improvements needed is long.. and discussed to death. I am using 4.x

I can't say its better than KDE3 (Still missing needed features to be able to replace KDE3 and I understand that and am looking forward to 4.2 release), but being that I am not a GNOME person yes it is better than Gnome.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation?
Currently have 4.1.1 from the factory repo
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
There are some things that KDE3 has that KDE4 does not yet to have, some such are: support for different wallpaper on every desktop, drag and drop support from the desktop to file manager, stable Amarok K3B Digikam (I do have the betas and alphas of each installed as well as the KDE3 versions so I can see the difference/still use the programs). I like all the desktop effects Kwin has in KDE4, but the only big problem I have with it is I am being bitten by a pretty nasty problem ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167927 ) other then having to give 60+ tries to get a network app to work its good.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
I like both KDE3 and KDE4.

General questions I have for you are:
1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x?
I can use either, but in general I use v3.x because it works, is stable, and seems to have the programs that I need to use. Secondly, I can extract a tarball to the desktop without having to go through a lot of extra work when I install a program. In v4.x I have to create a folder on the desktop, then use ark to extract the tarball to that folder, then get down to the business of installing whatever it was that I wanted to install in the OS.
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse?
My first experience with KDE4.1 was that it crashed when I tried to change the wallpaper to something that I liked. It wiped out my trash icon on the desktop in 3.x as well. I couldn't figure out a way to reinstall the trash icon on the desktop in 3.x or 4.x when I reinstalled 4.1, so now I have a trashcan icon in kicker. It works about the same, just can't get it in the "right" place on the desktop.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation?
I updated to v4.1 right from the start, because it was rumored to be much better. I suppose that is true, but compared to v3.x it isn't too good.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
I don't feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3. It just isn't stable enough, in my opinion. It is a little harder to do installations of programs that must be installed from tarball because it won't extract to one folder on the desktop automatically. I use KDE4 to play with to prepare for the inevitable future when I have to know how to use it, but don't use it for what I really need to do now.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
KDE3 is fine, and works good. KDE4 has a good future when it gets fixed to a stable condition, and when it becomes more fully featured.
Thanx

We've been having some interesting discussions over on the factory mailing list, and it was pointed out that maybe we were ignoring the regular users, so I figured I'd give it a shot and see how things have been going for those using KDE in openSUSE 11.0.
General questions I have for you are:
1. Which KDE are you using, v3.x or v4.x? V3.x. V4 is still missing some needed features and is rather unstable.
2. If you are using KDE4, what are your thoughts? Better than KDE3 or Gnome? Worse? Better than Gnome (what isn't ) , much worse than KDE3. V4 don't provide me with any thing I need from a DT-environment that V3 + Compiz are lacking.
3. If you are using KDE4, have you updated to the current v4.1.x build that is available or are you still using the v4.0.x build that came with the installation? Updated. Improvements with later versions, Getting closer to release status with 4.1.1.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses? Still consider it to have beta status and no replacement for V3. Have yet to found any features i V4
On Monday 08 September 2008, Larry Stotler wrote: that i will improve the way I work with my desktop environment. In my opinion it's more a show-off for graphical effects (like Vista) than an improvement of the way to do the actual work. (or I'm still haven't found it). The learning curve and needed addaption for V4 makes it a nightmare for deployment in any kind of production environment with ordernary users used to V3 or WinXP.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
V3 is nice but a bit old. A face lift (v3.6) withe some graphcal effects and Compiz integration may be nice. V4 have a long way yet to go

The simple fact that the question is being asked says it all. marketeering (tm:)), stubborness and even a certain amount of stupidity has put kde4 in great jeopardy. One should just not release at such an immature package, instead it was rolled out with great fanfare as the latest and the greatest, as the new king of the hill... many have said it, this premature release has got to be a microshoft plot... i certainly do not automatically discard that possibility. yes, i tried 4.0, thank God on a test user login, also gave 4.1 a chance, got out of it 1/2 hour later, have not looked at it for a month or so. now all of the 11.0 testing is stricktly on kde3. my main system is still 10.3. just being a bit more conservative this time, i can not help but keep wondering what else has been released as carelessly as kde4. d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

KDE4 + some KDE3 applications

KDE 4.0 (not KDE 4.1!) is worse than KDE3, but usable. Most things I am missing are available from KDE3 apps. Integration between KDE4 and KDE3 is lacking, I have filed some bug reports about this.

I am using KDE4.1. It is definitely better than KDE 4.0. Integration with KDE3 is still not perfect (Especially kpowersave and knetworkmanager). I am still reporting such issues.
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
Yes it is already a good replacement and i think will become a very good one with future versions.

I like the look and feel of KDE4 very much. Plasma looks good is really useful. Herbert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have tried out KDE 4.1. Now I use Gnome, and earlier (when I had open Suse 10.3) I have used KDE 3.

Worse than both.

see above
4. If you have used KDE3 in the past, and are using KDE4 now, do you feel that it is a good replacement for KDE3? Strengths of KDE4? Weaknesses?
I did not experience any strengths of KDE 4 because I have aborted my tests very soon. Weaknesses: - when i first started KDE 4.1, my first thought was that the desktop layout were corrupted and that I had got the wrong screen resolution. Soon i have realized that it is all deliberate. The shut-down icon in the lower right corner looks like a bunch of icons laying over each other. The same is for the strange icon at the left side of the task bar. The strange red thing in the upper right corner looks as if most part of it is outside the screen. That's why i first thought my screen resolution is wrong. - second: nothing works as intuitively as in KDE 3. You cannot simply drag the icons from the desktop to the task bar or vice versa, if you right- click at the desktop, there is no option to create a new shortcut, and when i tried to start Yast from the start menu, just nothing happened. At that point i was fed up and returned to my gnome desktop.
5. Do you like the look and feel of KDE in either KDE3 or KDE4? If not, what would improve it?
the handling of KDE 3 is OK, but i find the graphical design of gnome better. KDE 4 is IMHO a desaster.

Use of KDE apps on non KDE desktops is a further area of consideration. In general, you will need kdelibs to run KDE apps on non KDE desktops. This is not really been a problem in the past and I see no reason why it woulld be so in the future.
