mp4 is a container format. It may be many possibilities inside. I would suggest making sure you have ffmpeg installed, as well as Mplayer and vlc. Even if it is some obscure format inside, with these you can find out what is on the inside to address it further.
Yes, and no. MPEG4, like MPEG1 and 2, is a container format, but it is used to contain known codecs dictated by the spec. It can contain either MPEG4, part 2 videos (e.g. DIVX, XVID) or MPEG4, part 10 videos (H.264 or AVC). Charles
