does this mean the mail server is down?
No, it means that an ICMP package could not be sent to the destination. Furthermore you get the result that the entire network can't be reached. If you want to know if a mailserver is online and reachable I suggest you use "telnet hostname 25". When the server is online you will get the smtp banner of the server. If you have a residential ip it is possible that your provider does not allow you to connect to port 25 of any host unless it is the mailserver of your provider. -- Sandy List replies only please!
