I thought the purpose of /etc was to provide a home for configuration

containing ftp.gwdg.de, my primary installtion source. Where is
installation source configuration hidden?

Depends on SUSE version Felix.

For 10.0 it is in file:
/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/DESCRIPTION/description

in second line:
=URL: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra

There is one IS_CACHE_<source number> for each source.

Online update YOU would be in
/var/lib/YaST2/you/youservers
