First, set your monitor color for 6500K, in case you haven't done that already. When you use Yast to define the printer, choose the Deskjet 990C. When you sent a print job to it, say from OO, and choose "photo" quality, the printer will automatically go into it's highest quality.
For photos, once I've made all corrections in Gimp, I copy the tif file(s) to a CF card then put that into the printer, where it will print via a built-in display and menu. 'Frees up any action from the 'puter and the color matching is "spot on". I had a few 13"x19" prints to do for a client and the prints were GORGEOUS! Oh yes.....I use Epson Premium Glossy for 4"x6" and mostly Illford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper for 8.5"x11" & 13"x19".
'Hope this helps.

I think I can vouch for the quality of the prints the printer manages to output! I just got some samples from Fred of his work and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference from film prints. They look very good. I must say I was quite surprised and pleased with the quality this printer will do. Thanks Fred, got your pictures, look good. ;o) regards, Lee
