Unsupported printer, BUT AWESOME!!
I hope no one minds a mini-review here, but if you have need of an AWESOME professional photo printer, don't buy Epson. ;) My Epson 2200 recently died, and would have required an expensive factory repair. I started looking at what printer options were/are available in a pro. photo printer, and found the HP Photosmart 8750. It not only is cheaper than the Epson, but offers some features NOT found on Epson. HP doesn't have a driver for the 8750 yet, and the "common" driver doesn't support it either, but you can get it to work without a lot of work with SUSE 10.0. Now, here's the "AWESOME" part. Color matching has been NONexistant with most printers, including Epson for sometime......professional photo printers anyway. NO LONGER! HP has put color matching in fireware, and it is "spot on"!! The ink is dye based and is 100 yr. archival. If you do a good job with a good digital camera, and know what you're doing with Gimp, you can get EXCEPTIONAL results with this printer! So... ...how'd you get it to work, then? <snip> -- kai - www.perfectreign.com www.livebeans.com - the new NetBeans community 43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything.

First, set your monitor color for 6500K, in case you haven't done that already. When you use Yast to define the printer, choose the Deskjet 990C. When you sent a print job to it, say from OO, and choose "photo" quality, the printer will automatically go into it's highest quality. For photos, once I've made all corrections in Gimp, I copy the tif file(s) to a CF card then put that into the printer, where it will print via a built-in display and menu. 'Frees up any action from the 'puter and the color matching is "spot on". I had a few 13"x19" prints to do for a client and the prints were GORGEOUS! Oh yes.....I use Epson Premium Glossy for 4"x6" and mostly Illford Galerie Smooth Pearl paper for 8.5"x11" & 13"x19". 'Hope this helps. Fred -- Paid purchaser of ALL SuSE Linux releases since 6.x

I think I can vouch for the quality of the prints the printer manages to output! I just got some samples from Fred of his work and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference from film prints. They look very good. I must say I was quite surprised and pleased with the quality this printer will do. Thanks Fred, got your pictures, look good. ;o) regards, Lee
