Small terminology question: the task bar isn't the panel at the bottom of the screen, that's kicker. The task bar is an applet running inside kicker showing you open windows.
So, do you have kicker and not the task bar? If so, right-click on kicker and select Add to panel, and select taskbar from the list you get
Got you. No, I do not have a kicker. If I log out then back in again, issue command killall kicker && kicker, I get the kicker folded up on the left. Click the handle to open it up, it opens up to the right but carries on and dissappears to the right, leaving no handle on either side of the screen to open it up again. Peter C
