I've recently done some updates on Suse10.0. Since then I was getting messages on kde apps, no mime type no octet stream. I searched through yast and installed some mime programs, that got rid of the above message after logging out and back in again. I've also lost my taskbar and the screen was blank. I've sorted out the blank screen, created a blank bar at the bottom of the screen and added the menu launcher to keep me going. I had this problem after an update some months ago and I eventually managed to reinstall the correct taskbar by issuing a command in ALT F2 -> run command. But I can't remember what that command was. Has anyone an idea what it is? KDE apps, now show the file, edit, view menus above the bar which has minimise, close icons. Is this a new style for kde? Peter C

The command for the panel (taskbar?) is kicker. -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet, you can't win. -Lazarus Long -- Linux 2.6.12-10-686

The command for the panel (taskbar?) is kicker. -- Jim Barnes -- I thought that, but it doesn't work.

-- Jim Barnes -- I've done that, now I've got no taskbar again. No menu list so I right clicked on screen, run command > konsole. Typed in kicker and message was kicker already running. I've scrolled around at the bottom of the screen and I can't find and minimised handles. Window decorations are normal.

Uh oh! Do 'killall kicker && kicker' to get your panel back. Maybe a /tmp/kde-<user>/? file needs to be deleted and allowed to be recreated upon login? Wish I could help further but I'm writing from Ubuntu on my laptop. -- Jim Barnes -- Certainly the game is rigged. Small terminology question: the task bar isn't the panel at the bottom of the screen, that's kicker. The task bar is an applet running inside kicker showing you open windows. So, do you have kicker and not the task bar? If so, right-click on kicker and select Add to panel, and select taskbar from the list you get

I have a similar problem: I lose window decorations, but kicker is still there. I can not minimize windows, or select them form the kicker panel. Other than restarting KDE, is there another solution? Regards. -- Alfredo Cole-Tuckler

Got you. No, I do not have a kicker. If I log out then back in again, issue command killall kicker && kicker, I get the kicker folded up on the left. Click the handle to open it up, it opens up to the right but carries on and dissappears to the right, leaving no handle on either side of the screen to open it up again. Peter C

Interesting. If you open a window, and maximise it, do you see the right side of the window, like the control buttons on the top right? Maybe KDE has some strange ideas about your screen dimensions. Do you get any error messages in .xsession-errors in your home directory?

I've sorted it by creating another user and copying their kicker config files over to my directory. So far, all ok. Peter C
