Then rebuild the nvidia module
nvidia-installer --update -f
All this went fine and a reboot brought everything up OK.
BUT: When I started VMWare (booting Windows 98) it would no longer let me go into full-screen mode. I get the following error:
Unable to turn on direct graphics. Failed to switch to full screen SVGA mode.

So, My guess was that the nvidia-installer command (above) installed the latest version of the nvidia driver and its DGA support was broken. Turns out to have been a good guess. I had an older version of the driver saved away and installed that. Now all works OK. Bob
