VMWare, SuSE 9.3, Latest Kernel Update
Hi, I updated my SuSE 9.3 to the latest kernel (offerred by YOU). As is usual for kernel updates I needed to: cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig make prepare-all Then rebuild the vmware modules vmware-config.pl Then rebuild the nvidia module nvidia-installer --update -f All this went fine and a reboot brought everything up OK. BUT: When I started VMWare (booting Windows 98) it would no longer let me go into full-screen mode. I get the following error: Unable to turn on direct graphics. Failed to switch to full screen SVGA mode. I tried removing and reinstalling the vmeare tools but it made no difference. Has anyone had experience with this combination? Bob

Dec 16 13:22:15: mks| ---------------------------------------- I found a Q&A on VMWare's web site with the following: The XFree86 driver for your video card, and your video card hardware, must support DGA with acceleration. So, My guess was that the nvidia-installer command (above) installed the latest version of the nvidia driver and its DGA support was broken. Turns out to have been a good guess. I had an older version of the driver saved away and installed that. Now all works OK. Bob
Further Update: I see from NVIDIA's web site that they have deliberately removed DGA support with the latest driver. Didn't see a reason why. Bob
