For anyone interested, I have tested the suggested (thanks to Robert Schiele) command "lsb_release -ir" on several distributions: SuSE 10.0 - provides distribution/release output Fedora Core 4 - provides distribution/release output Ubuntu 5.04 - provides distribution/release output Gentoo 2005.0 - not supported Mepis 3.3.2.test - not supported If anyone has any other distributions they could test this on and provide feedback, it would be appreciated.
