ThinkPads tend to be good. I have an R31 that works well. Also, I recently read that HP is selling some Linux loaded notebooks in Africa, so they're likely OK with Linux too.

I'll second that from James. HP are running a range of laptops preconfigured with Linux (not SuSE though, Ubuntu) in the UK market so they are probably worldwide.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I searched the Opensuse Linux 10 HCL/Laptops list at http://www.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops
Though I am not running a "high-end" laptop, I've been very satisfied with 9.3 under my Dell Inspiron. It loaded up without an issue and all functionality has been as expected. Very little "tweaking" has been necessary. My only gotchas have been (a) the ATI card, which I had to wrangle a bit to get 3d working and (b) the wireless card (Intell Pro Wireless 2000bg) which works great when it is on, but I can't seem to configure it to auto connect to my (WPE) wireless network by default. (This may be an issue with me and not the network.) Dell Europe is now selling laptops pre-configured with Mandrake, which tells me they'd be ready to switch to SuSE. My only concern for you is you mentioned CAD. Which type of CAD do you work with? Do you require AutoCAD 2005/6? Can you use *.dxf files or do you need the *.dwg files? QCad can only open the exchange (*.dxf) files. Between the *.dwg files (which my company uses) and MS Project files, I have to be sure to keep downgrading to XP once in a while, since I cannot get AutoCAD working under Wine/Crossover. -- Kai Ponte www.perfectreign.com linux - genuine windows replacement part
