Maybe this hardware model are too new? This surprise me, because at least Fujitsu Siemens tells in their "Insight" paper that they "early defined Linux (beside Windows and Solaris), as one of their strategic operating system, like no other vendor in Europe. Celsius workstations (like Lifebook Notebooks and Scenic PCs) are ready for use under Linux". In the datasheet for Celsius H230 both Redhat and Novell Linux is listed among the OS (certification on request). I also looked for IBM Thinkpad T42p and T43P, which according to the HCL lists above should run Linux ok. IBM Thinkpads tend to be much higher priced then a lot of the other name brand machines, such as HP, Toshiba, Dell, etc. In the case of IBM hardware, you get what you pay for. In my experience, IBM's hardware is the best. No doubt. If you can afford it, buy IBM. -- Christopher Shanahan

I've just looked in the latest leaflet from HP (it came in the latest issue of Linux Magazine). It has a HP Compaq nx6110 notebook that is claimed as Linux ready. It apparently ships with FreeDOS (why?) but it says "your reseller can provide you with the Ubuntu CD which enables all tools like wireless and battery safe mode with Ubuntu Linux". Now in the UK a claim like that must stand up legally without any fudging. Our consumer laws are pretty strict. Though I am not running a "high-end" laptop, I've been very satisfied with 9.3 under my Dell Inspiron. It loaded up without an issue and all functionality has been as expected. Very little "tweaking" has been necessary. My only gotchas have been (a) the ATI card, which I had to wrangle a bit to get 3d working and (b) the wireless card (Intell Pro Wireless 2000bg) which works great when it is on, but I can't seem to configure it to auto connect to my (WPE) wireless network by default. (This may be an issue with me and not the network.) Dell Europe is now selling laptops pre-configured with Mandrake, which tells me they'd be ready to switch to SuSE. My only concern for you is you mentioned CAD. Which type of CAD do you work with? Do you require AutoCAD 2005/6? Can you use *.dxf files or do you need the *.dwg files? QCad can only open the exchange (*.dxf) files. Apparently Dell are shipping a range of laptops/notebooks with Mandriva ready installed. So, SuSE ought to run on them. I have the H230 and as laptop is just great. But I run WindowsXP on it. Previously I had the Celsius Mobile H (Pentium 4) and that was clearly a very badly designed laptop from the technical point of view (it was designed for Pentium 3 and could not handle P4) - although otherwise it was the best design I've ever seen (much better than Apples for instance!). At that time Fujitsu-Siemens had a certification for SuSE. And live-eval CD's worked just fine on it. Now the H230 - which is a completely different computer - did not run SuSE 9.3 live eval. I was hoping it would. So I do not know what the "certification on request" means. The problem was the display adapter. Everything else worked, but all the colors were always wrong. I got the kind of effect where you have a limited colormap which is sifted or suffled somehow. So, you need to check the situation on the display drivers beforehand.... (and if I remember correctly, doesn't M70 have the same display adapter?) -- HG.
