AOL has it's place. For me, it is for the people I don't want to hold their hand for days /months explaining how email actually works. For dialup? It is a good excuse for your friend to get broadband. Then they can simply use a browser like firefox to login to their AOL account. Last I heard, if you remove dialup from the AOL account, you can get everything else for $5 a month. B-) On Sunday 28 November 2004 09:19 pm, BandiPat wrote:

In earlier *internet* days, this post would bring laughs and flames you cannot imagine.
*Everyone* can do without AOL, just as you can miss the first 15 minutes at the movies and loose nothing except the comming-attractions and 10 minutes of commercials.
AOL is windoz of the internet (tm). I Said That!
I agree whole heartedly, but what can you do? At least I've gotten him to look at an alternative. AOL may be more trouble than it is worth, but it is till everywhere. I am an independent computer consultant and I can't count how many clients I have who run AOL. To have someone actually ask about alternatives is a big deal. :-)

Jesse, I think most of us here would recommend that if you can get him to switch to Linux, then you can get him to switch to a better ISP, possibly even broadband.
Here is a site I had found or heard about in using AOL in Linux, but never got a chance to try it, because the customer dropped them cold turkey when I switched them to Linux!

Let us know if you get it working and how well. At least let me know, as I would still be interested to hear.
and remember; Have a lot of fun!
