Hello. Recently, I convinced a friend of mine who has been married to Windows up until now to give SUSE Linux a try. As he needed to rebuild his system due to issues with WindowsXP, I built the machine as a dual-boot system with SUSE Linux 9.1 Professional. My buddy likes Linux but the one sticking point is that under Windows he uses America Online, and there does not seem to be a replacement for the client under Linux. Has anyone run into this before? Is there an alternative client I can have him use in place of the AOL Windows client. I don't want to install Wine as the system he uses is rather slow and I'm not sure that performance would be acceptable. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Jesse
Jesse, Are you talking about getting a dialup connection in the first place? If so, you want penggy from http://www.peng.apinc.org/ but you'll need to compile it from source as it has trouble with some package versions from 9.1 Dylan -- "I see your Schwartz is as big as mine" -Dark Helmet

Hi Dylan, Yes, it is a dial-up connection. I'll take a look at penggy, I don't mind having to compile, and besides, it'll introduce my friend to the concept. Thank you, Jesse
Hello. I just wanted to follow up and let those of you who were interested know that Penggy v0.2.1 compiled and works just fine. It gave me a nice opportunity to introduce my buddy to the concept of compiling an application from source, as well as introducing him to the bash shell environment as Penggy is a command line application and does not have a bulky graphical client. I liked the fact that all it does is establish the connection with AOL and nothing else, leaving you free to explore the various browser and e-mail clients which come with the SUSE distribution. My friend had fun learning about Linux and now has enough knowledge to continue on his own. Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on this issue. Jesse

In earlier *internet* days, this post would bring laughs and flames you cannot imagine. *Everyone* can do without AOL, just as you can miss the first 15 minutes at the movies and loose nothing except the comming-attractions and 10 minutes of commercials. I agree whole heartedly, but what can you do? At least I've gotten him to look at an alternative. AOL may be more trouble than it is worth, but it is till everywhere. I am an independent computer consultant and I can't count how many clients I have who run AOL. To have someone actually ask about alternatives is a big deal. :-) Jesse

Jesse, I think most of us here would recommend that if you can get him to switch to Linux, then you can get him to switch to a better ISP, possibly even broadband. Here is a site I had found or heard about in using AOL in Linux, but never got a chance to try it, because the customer dropped them cold turkey when I switched them to Linux! http://www.peng.apinc.org/eng/index.php Let us know if you get it working and how well. At least let me know, as I would still be interested to hear. and remember; Have a lot of fun! Lee
AOL has it's place. For me, it is for the people I don't want to hold their hand for days /months explaining how email actually works. For dialup? It is a good excuse for your friend to get broadband. Then they can simply use a browser like firefox to login to their AOL account. Last I heard, if you remove dialup from the AOL account, you can get everything else for $5 a month. B-) On Sunday 28 November 2004 09:19 pm, BandiPat wrote:

AOL used to be very useful at one time, when their software came on floppies. You could easily peel their label off and reformat the diskette. When they switched to CDs, a great source of free floppies dried up. ;-)

Watch out! Those coasters might have IE upgrades on them. Someone should sell plugs for the holes and cork backing for proper
coasters.

Please be a little more considerate in your email composition. You used a completely unrelated message/subject, top posted and quoted in full. I quote from the suse-linux-e-help boiler-plate message: Q17. I was being polite and prefixed the subject of my off-topic posting with '[OT]'. After posting it I received a nasty message about the thread being blocked and that if I persist in trying to start off-topic threads I'll be unsubscribed and blocked from resubscribing. What's up with that? A17. Sorry, we really have no choice. We've asked nicely over the years for people to take their off-topic threads elsewhere in the interest of keeping the messages per day on SLE under 200 and, well, that just didn't work. We now have a list, suse-ot, that's devoted solely to off-topic discussions. That's right, all off-topic all the time. Email suse-ot-subscribe@suse.com to subscribe. I am sure I read somewhere on the AOL site that you can now connect to AOL without using their bl**** client if you have broadband. Well you can give this a shot. I make no claims to how it works, as I don't AOL other than AIM. :)
