what version of xsane do you have?
Started with the default installed with 9.0, then replaced it with the latest release for Ver 9.0 off the packman site this afternoon, which limited me to two choices, replaced that with what shipped on the DVD

You didn't say what interface the scanner has to the computer, usbX.

did you make *any* effort to configure the scanner or did you merely start xsane and *hope* it would magically appear? Did you access the xsane site and read about configuring your epson scanner? Did you goggle for information?
