Desiring a high quality scanner for my office, I looked to the SANE page for suggestions. My preference was to go with an epson and the final decision based on price, performance, and Linux compatibility, based on the info from the SANE page, was the Epson 4870. Scanner arrived today, I hooked it up, and viola, it's NOT supported! At least I can't get it to be seen with my 9.0 install with all the latest updates. Not using 9.1 which I also have due to ALL the usb problems. YsST offers about 20 options for Epson but the 4870 is not among them. So I jumped out to the pacman site and downloaded all the latest sane stuff for SuSE, installed it, and when I was done, I now had 2 options for Epson. Dumped that, reinstalled from the distro DVD, and now am back to the original options, but no better off than before. Does anyone have any ideas on getting the Epson 4870 to work with SuSE 9.0? tnx, dave -- David C. Yup, that's why I bought it.

Started with the default installed with 9.0, then replaced it with the latest release for Ver 9.0 off the packman site this afternoon, which limited me to two choices, replaced that with what shipped on the DVD

URL : http://www.xsane.org/ Summary : An X Frontend for SANE Description : XSane is a Gtk-based, comfortable, and stable X front-end for SANE (Scanner Access now Easy) under Linux. XSane allows scanning, copying, and faxing and can be used as a scan module for GIMP. Furthermore, there are versions of XSane for other operating systems, which allow to access a scanner connected to a Linux box via network. Check out http://www.wolfsburg.de/~rauch/sane/sane-xsane.html for that. You didn't say what interface the scanner has to the computer, usbX.

Did you edit /etc/sane.d/epson.conf ??
no, didn't think about that.
what is the output from scanimage -L sane-find-scanner
never occurred to me to do this either; will do on monday.

Dave, I would recommend you have a look at the EPSON KOWA website at http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html You can download the Image Scan for Linux frontend which supports the Perfection 4870 PHOTO scanner. They distribute a rpm which should work under SuSE.

Thanks Andreas - Did just that along with the latest release of xsane and it's development libraries and installed all the programs. What "seems" to have made the difference (the only things I actually did differently today from Friday) was a combo of modifying epson.conf and installing the KOWA 4870 front end. In any event, my response is WOW! The 4870 under xsane is a VERY nice combo. And thanks to everyone elso who took time to provide suggestions; all the help is greatly appreciated! dave -- David C. Dave, I am glad it is working well for you. I have one question, though, as I have no experience with scanners myself but at this point am thinking about shopping for one and hope to make it work on my Linux PC. You say that you installed the latest release of xsane and its libraries, as well as Epson's KOWA frontend. Isn't xsane a scanning frontend, just as the KOWA software? Do you mean you installed the latest sane libraries? BTW, I am thinking about an EPSON 2400, that's why I came across the KOWA software.

Well, after being pleased as a peacock with my success yesterday, I fired up the box this morning and poof, no scanner found. Tried as user, as root, as su - and also as sux, but nope, no scanner. "sane-find-scanner" still gives the same results, that of "Found usb scanner (vendor = 0x04b8, product = 0x0128) at lib:001:002" and "scanimage -L" still reports "no scanners were identified". So, thought I'd be real smart and reinstall everything piece by piece including the redundant epson frontend "iscan" but no, still no go. Doing a scanner search on the sane page gives: Manufacturer Epson Model Name4870 Bus Type Backend epson Version 0.2.32 Supported Devices Manual Page Manufacturer epson Status complete Model Perfection 4870 Interface USB Comment US version of the GT-9800 Backends included in the current tarball - see SANE Distribution It would seem to me at this point that what I'm experiencing is a backend problem. Now to review the 40 or so pages I downloaded today. So stay tuned; "with a little help from my friends" - apologies to the Beattles - I plan on solving this problem. Did you try unplugging and reconnecting the USB plug? I've found that many times with my 1650, that will do the trick in getting it working. Lee -- --- KMail v1.7 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 Those Who Dance Are Considered Insane, by Those Who Cannot Hear the Music!

Rebooting will not make an install go away. Repeated re-installations will only confuse the issue and possibly introduce errors.
It would seem to me at this point that what I'm experiencing is a backend problem.
Sounds like a configuration problem. Look at /etc/sane.d/epson.conf and make sure that only one line is *not* commented and it is the one that worked: /dev/usbscanner or /dev/usb/scanner ???

I wouldn't think so. However, the only thing I did to loose the function was to turn off the system upon leaving the office and reboot the following morning.

Only one is commented out. Since I see four possibilities (the two options listed each with and without a 0) I tried them all today and all gave the same results: no scanners found.

did you try VueScan?
Absolutely! Said there were no scanners.
And, remember, only one app may talk to the scanner at a time.
Only tried one at a time. And when I occasionally make that error, vuescan is quick to remind me. I think it may be time to uninstall all the stuff including /sane.d and all its files and start over and see what happens. I even played the turn the scanner off/on and remove/replace cable games but none of that helped either. "sane-find-scanner" still reports the same info about there being a scanner available and knows a bit about it (previously fully detailed a couple messages previous), but that's about the only positive aspect so far. dave -- David C. I had similar problems, nothing but vuescan would work. Tracked it down to ~/.sane/xscanimage/xscanimage.rc, I changed device from (nil) to (usb) and it started working, though every time it exits it writes back (nil), it never fails to work subsequently, very quaint, don't know, it must hide the working settings somewhere else.
