I also had this problem updating from 8.2, with a Sound Blaster live 5.1, and
when I ran alsa tools I saw the master volume was set to zero. I set it at
75% and the sound was still zero. After a big while making probes and tries I
also saw that the mute button was activated 8-). After deactivating it again
have sound plays nice.
But likely your problem is not the same...

But likely your problem is not the same...
