Help- no SOUND on SuSE 9.0 (2.4.21-144-default)

I also had this problem updating from 8.2, with a Sound Blaster live 5.1, and when I ran alsa tools I saw the master volume was set to zero. I set it at 75% and the sound was still zero. After a big while making probes and tries I also saw that the mute button was activated 8-). After deactivating it again have sound plays nice. But likely your problem is not the same... This is a problem with built-in AC97 type sound devices, just very unreliable. They work, but it's not the best solution for sound. You could try using a different sound output plugin in xmms. If that doesn't bring it up, drop down to init 3 and again do as Patrick suggested, restart alsa. Then back to init 5 to see if xmms will give you some output. NOTE: after 'rcalsasound start' or 'restart', you will have to restart kmix (or whatever mixer you use) to get sound output. But I do not change to runlevel3 and back ??? -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

Not usually something you have to do, you are right Patrick. This was just a method of getting KDE restarted, so that he would reset things there or Gnome. Sometimes they get hung up on something and it's just easier to restart it. Sometimes it can all be redone within, but sometimes it can't. Thanks for everyone's help on this. All I needed to see was 'problem with built in AC'97' and I knew what I had to do. 1. I went to YaST, disabled the onboard card. 2. Powered down the machine and opened the case. 3. Located an empty pci slot. 4. Slapped the SIIG Advance Logic ALS4000 card I had lyin' around. 5. Booted the machine, YaST discovered the card and all is well. I tried all of the other solutions with the AC'97 card and nothing seemed to work. Thanks again for all the help. -=Thinker On Sun, 2003-12-14 at 15:34, BandiPat wrote:

In general I agree, but I have to mention my 3 linux machines (one a laptop) have no problem whatsoever with with Ac97. You GOT TO have acpi running properly for this to work. Oh, and I use arts with no probelem either, and prefer it so that I hear mail arrival in kmail while listening to streaming audio with xmms. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I am not an expert but I have the same problem and, with the help of the mailinglist, the solution for me was to enable "Digital audio extraction" in the configuration of the "CD Audio Player" input plugin.
