Don, A couple of things you might try (if you haven't alread). I find Gqview very useful for previewing images I might want to use as backdrops. It gives you a preveiw column on the left side of its window tha allows you to scroll down a batch of thumbnails. Also, the file manager with XFCE (xffm) will display small thumbnails in a Nautilus-like window. You might try either one of those...
