Can anyone recommend modems that work reletively flawlessly and out of the box with SuSE 8.2? I know suse.com has a whole list of ones that will work, but most of those are brands I've never heard of. And I figure I'd ask on here to see which ones people have used and know work well. I'm looking at both internal and external modems.
While most people will tell you, and I agree completely, that a normal serial port external modem is the best thing to invest in, there are some internal modems that would work, if price is a strong consideration. I've used a Zoltrix SmartSpirit internal sofware modem for a long time. The important thing is not really the brand of the modem, but what's inside. The Zoltrix internal modems are based on chipsets by Conexant - HSF and HCF. There is a guy who wrote drivers for these chipsets, and they work well. The site is http://www.mbsi.ca (I think). There's a link from conexant's site, in any way. There are other chipsets as well, but I'm not familiar with them. I believe Lucent modems work too, and I noticed that SuSE includes a driver for some or other intel chip. As far as external modems go, you can buy pretty much any one, as long as it connects to your serial port. I have a very very cheap one, and it works as well as my mother's much more expensive one. I don't even know what brand mine is, but it runs on a Rockwell (now conexant) chipset. And it just works Hope this helps Hans
