Can anyone recommend modems that work reletively flawlessly and out of the box with SuSE 8.2? I know suse.com has a whole list of ones that will work, but most of those are brands I've never heard of. And I figure I'd ask on here to see which ones people have used and know work well. I'm looking at both internal and external modems.
I trust only external modems: US Robotics Courier is definitely my all-time
favorite... also, US Robotics Sportster....
Basically, any EXTERNAL modem (not USB, only SERIAL) will do the trick :)
Regards,
Radu

Excuse my ignorance, I've never heard of these. What makes them so special? Or are we not talking 56k dial-up now? Thanks Hans

Couriers are USRobotics Modems. I have five sitting on the shelf, one is an HST. I may even still have an audio 300 baud around somewhere. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

But why are they so expensive? At $300 they've got to be very very cool Hans

They're designed for maximum performance and reliability in a commercial environment. On a phone line that is less than stellar, a Courier will commonly outperform an ordinary modem. Same rule applies with ISP's modems. Some modems just don't work very well with certain other modems. Couriers have no such handicap. -- "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom...." Well, the reasons why I've said that US Robotics Courier is the KING of
analogue modems are:
1. Even here, in Romania, I have NO problem with them on dial-up lines, it
worked between 9k and 56k
2. There's no leased line where Courier cannot work
3. It worked on every Linux system I've ever installed
So, if you can afford one, that's THE modem :)

Nothing USB ? I was looking at the USB list and saw that there were a few USD external modems that work according to gromitkc. My favourite is also the USR but surely is doesn't have to be serial as hell I have the USB ports, may as well use them on linux!! :) -- ======================================================================== Hylton Conacher - Licenced Windows user Registered Linux user # 229959 Using Linux Mandrake 9.0 with KDE 3 on a 2.4.19-16mdk kernel ========================================================================

I have no problems with my internal US robotics modems in many versions of SuSE. -- Micxz

I've got Zoom external modem that works perfectly...right out of the box. I also got a Creative external modem (2 actually) off Ebay that work perfectly with Linux also...right out of the box. These are Creatives newest external modem models also. While most people will tell you, and I agree completely, that a normal serial port external modem is the best thing to invest in, there are some internal modems that would work, if price is a strong consideration. I've used a Zoltrix SmartSpirit internal sofware modem for a long time. The important thing is not really the brand of the modem, but what's inside. The Zoltrix internal modems are based on chipsets by Conexant - HSF and HCF. There is a guy who wrote drivers for these chipsets, and they work well. The site is http://www.mbsi.ca (I think). There's a link from conexant's site, in any way. There are other chipsets as well, but I'm not familiar with them. I believe Lucent modems work too, and I noticed that SuSE includes a driver for some or other intel chip. As far as external modems go, you can buy pretty much any one, as long as it connects to your serial port. I have a very very cheap one, and it works as well as my mother's much more expensive one. I don't even know what brand mine is, but it runs on a Rockwell (now conexant) chipset. And it just works Hope this helps Hans
