On the same topic I have SuSE 8.2 Pro and /usr/lib/BlackdownJava2-1.4.1/jre loaded. However, mozilla keeps giving a error. --------------------------------------------------------------------- LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/BlackdownJava2-1.4.1/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so [/usr/lib/BlackdownJava2-1.4.1/jre/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so: undefined symbol: _ZN16nsServiceManager23GetGlobalServiceManagerEPP17nsIServiceManager] ====================================================================== Is Mozilla or Blackdown the peoblem? According to mozilla.org Blackdown is the correct version to have.
You should have java installed in /usr/lib/java, which should go through a series of symbolic links to /usr/lib/BlackdownJava-1.4.1, which contains jre.
8.2 also provides SunJava-1.4.1 in /usr/lib and you can use that instead by changing the symbolic link (see man ln or use konqueror as root)
You can install earlier versions of java. The natural place would be /usr/lib or perhaps /usr/local/lib. I think the way to specify a different version (e.g. some applications have managed to be 1.3.1-specific) is to use a command
# JRE_HOME=/usr/lib/YourJava/jre YourProgram
