Hi Ben,
the video card is a ASUS V7100 which used the NVIDIA GForce 2 mx chip set.
Worked 100% with Mandrake 9.1 and recently installed the new 3D drivers from
NVIDIA (before blowing away Mandrake). Is this the culprit?

I'll bet you 10 - 1 it's dying on trying to start the real X server
which it does at the time your saying it dies. What video card do you
have ..let us know an there might be a work around.
