8.2 Installs only 1 of 5 CD's ..wtf?
Well hopefully someone can put me on the straight and narrow. For some unknown reason 8.2 Pro's installation utility will not continue past installing the first of 5 CD's. I have tried this three times now and each time it finishes with CD1 and goes into the "completed basic install mode" and proceeds to reboot. This leaves me with a dead machine and a sour taste in my mouth. I have tried entering the cmd "cdromdevice=hdc" in the boot prompt prior to running the install but still no go. I am using an LG DVD CD-RW combo drive however I'm not sure if that's even an issue. Can not seem to find any reference to this problem on the SuSE support site. Hopefully someone has run into this and can shed some light. Thanks! K. Nesbitt --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi Ben, the video card is a ASUS V7100 which used the NVIDIA GForce 2 mx chip set. Worked 100% with Mandrake 9.1 and recently installed the new 3D drivers from NVIDIA (before blowing away Mandrake). Is this the culprit? That's what's meant to happen. After the reboot, yast should start up again and continue installation from disks 2-5
This leaves me with a dead machine
How do you mean "dead"? What happens after reboot?

No go? If it installs from CD1 it must have found your CD device, no?

If you have a dvd drive, why not install from the DVD?

This has to fall under installation support.
Yes, this has happened several times to me. The idea is taht it reboots after the 1st CD, alive, and then asks for the remainder. My problem was with the partitioning (needed a /boot partition in the first 1024 cylinders) and the kernel parameter acpi=off added. (But I'm an dual processor machine, and I'm told ACPI isn't SMP stable.) As an easy solution, try the "minimal" install, it only needs the 1st CD, then you can add the rest.. Wasn't there something on this list earlier about someone having trouble installing from a LG dual drive? He thought it was due to scratched cds, but as it turned out, everything seem to be pointing to this LG DVD/CDRW combo drive? As Anders pointed too, if it's a DVD drive, then why are you using the CDs? Have you tried the DVD disc yet? You might want to check with LG to see if there is a bios update for that drive as well. my problem with the LG combo DVD/CDRW drive is that it failed to install off the DVD (Hung at the package selection step) and it isn't recognised as a DVD drive on the desktop (It's only come up as a cdrecorder although I can actually read DVDs and to get Ogle GUI to work correctly, I've made a symlink so the /dev/dvd that Ogle is looking for points to /dev/cdrecorder) My other hassle is that I can't get DMA to switch on for this drive (hdc), but this could be a mobo problem as I couldn't get DMA to work with an ordinary DVD drive before hand. I've yet to try burning CDs with it, as I'm a bit annoyed that my CD burning software of choice appears to have disappeared (KreateCD).
Paul, I gave up on the install DVD's with my LG combo. It did as yours -hung at package selection. I see there is a bios update for the drive but it means pulling it and running the update util in a WIN machine. It may have no bearing on this problem anyways. It was I with the scratched disks, which turned out to be a red herring (still after SuSE for a replacement). Fortunately, the CD's went in without issue and all is well. I am going to raise this DVD install issue with SuSE support Monday and see what their solution is. Don't believe the DMA issue is related to the LG combo drive. I have mine optimized using hdparm and it works great now with such things as mplayer (no video jitters). K. Nesbitt ---- On Sunday 27 April 2003 02:21, paul cooke wrote:
