I don't really know what you mean by "touch"ing /etc/apt/preferences what do I need to do? The following are the components that I am using with apt and synaptic: apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm apt4rpm-0.64.1-0.noarch.rpm perl-XML-LibXML-1.53-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-LibXML-Common-0.12-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-NamespaceSupport-1.08-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-SAX-0.12-1.i586.rpm synaptic-0.26-rb1.i386.rpm I can try root, but does it make a difference as to whether you log in and use synaptic as root, su or sux as to the result if synaptic doesn't work? <snip> Have you "touch"ed /etc/apt/preferences yet? usually synaptic errors out the second time you start it because /etc/apt/preferences couldn't be parsed or opened.(I think that was the message). Did you, by mistake, download an "untested" version of synaptic and or apt-get? Did you install three packages?(apt, aptdevel, synaptic ) which versions? I'm running 0.5.4 cnc9, and the latest synaptic, maybe those will work for you? Have you tried logging in as root and running it there?(Not wise but at least will now if it works)
Hope that helps. Your posts didn't bother me but I guess I'm a little more relaxed than some of the others.
