Re: SuSE-linux-E posts and apt-get/synaptic
I don't really know what you mean by "touch"ing /etc/apt/preferences what do I need to do? The following are the components that I am using with apt and synaptic: apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm apt4rpm-0.64.1-0.noarch.rpm perl-XML-LibXML-1.53-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-LibXML-Common-0.12-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-NamespaceSupport-1.08-1.i586.rpm perl-XML-SAX-0.12-1.i586.rpm synaptic-0.26-rb1.i386.rpm I can try root, but does it make a difference as to whether you log in and use synaptic as root, su or sux as to the result if synaptic doesn't work? Cheers, Brian Franklin Maurer wrote:
<snip> Have you "touch"ed /etc/apt/preferences yet? usually synaptic errors out the second time you start it because /etc/apt/preferences couldn't be parsed or opened.(I think that was the message). Did you, by mistake, download an "untested" version of synaptic and or apt-get? Did you install three packages?(apt, aptdevel, synaptic ) which versions? I'm running 0.5.4 cnc9, and the latest synaptic, maybe those will work for you? Have you tried logging in as root and running it there?(Not wise but at least will now if it works)
Hope that helps. Your posts didn't bother me but I guess I'm a little more relaxed than some of the others.

Do you have a /etc/apt/preferences? If not try ... touch /etc/apt/preferences.
apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm
apt-devel-0.5.4cnc9-1cl.i386.rpm
apt4rpm-0.64.1-0.noarch.rpm
synaptic-0.26-rb1.i386.rpm
I think I run synaptic 0.24. Maybe try that one. I think it was Joe who said to rerun apt-get update. Did you try that?

Probably not. But if it did, we'd know that your synaptic actually worked. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.1
Weird, logged into SuSE 8.1 and lost my task bar, set the desktop menu, rebooted, same thing happened again, rebooted, on the third try I got my task bar back and now Synaptic works like a charm :-) Now if I could only figure out how to get a button that I setup in the task bar for Synaptic to actually start the app without having to log in :-( Many thanks, Brian Franklin Maurer wrote:

You'll always have to give root's password. Well I guess you could setuid root but it's probably not a good idea. Try konsole -e sux -c synaptic as the command to execute. Glad you got it to work. Only wish we knew how :-) -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.1
