Do you have any other USB devices or SCSI devices in your system? If you do then the camera may not be /dev/sda1, but sdb1 or maybe sdc1
On a few of my machines fdisk -l will show the available partitions.
Fdisk -l shows dev hda1,hda2,hda3 that's all.
Is there a setting on the camera needed to switch it to playback mode?
