If you are not running a dual processor machine. Then you should not be running an SMP kernel. It's for machines with more then one proc in them. I would boot off the CD telling it to boot installed system. It will use the kernel on the CD. Then I would replace the SMP kernel with the one called k_deflt because this would be for single proc machines. Your problems will most likely disappear, but because you are using Mantel's 2.4.19 kernel on an 8.0 system..you may have to update some other pkgs to get everything running up to spec.
There was a mini-benchmark published recently on the advantage of hyper
threading. Apparently you can get something like 30% better performance
compared to a single cpu kernel if you use SMP with ht. Up to 50%
increases in the 2.5.x development series was also mentioned.
So if it's possible to get SMP working I'd say it's worth it.
