How and where do i set XDM up on a headless box without X? I have a NCD 200 terminal that i got for free and i want to utilize it on my Linux network. I tried it against my SuSE 8.0 box with kde. It got the grey X default screen but no windowmanager. I have KDE taking care of my logins so i guess XDM isnt set up.. So the question is; How do i set XDM up on a system that isnt supposed to have X at all? (headless black box...) I got the impression that X had to be running in order to have XDM up..
Not at all. In 8.0, assuming you're running the default SuSE supplied KDM you can set it in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" will enable remote logins, and DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="no" means that it won't start a local X server, so *only* remote logins are managed with kdm Running SuSEconfig will make the changes to kdm's config files. After that, restart kdm and you should be set Anders
