How and where do i set XDM up on a headless box without X? I have a NCD 200 terminal that i got for free and i want to utilize it on my Linux network. I tried it against my SuSE 8.0 box with kde. It got the grey X default screen but no windowmanager. I have KDE taking care of my logins so i guess XDM isnt set up.. So the question is; How do i set XDM up on a system that isnt supposed to have X at all? (headless black box...) I got the impression that X had to be running in order to have XDM up.. -- /Rikard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rjhn@linux.nu Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 70 464 99 39 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

Not at all. In 8.0, assuming you're running the default SuSE supplied KDM you can set it in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" will enable remote logins, and DISPLAYMANAGER_STARTS_XSERVER="no" means that it won't start a local X server, so *only* remote logins are managed with kdm Running SuSEconfig will make the changes to kdm's config files. After that, restart kdm and you should be set Anders

The problem is (i think, as i havent been able to try yet) that the Xclient for the NCD is XDM aware only... Or is KDE and XDM the same? -- /Rikard ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Rikard Johnels email : rjhn@linux.nu Web : http://www.rikjoh.com Mob : +46 70 464 99 39 ------------------------ Public PGP fingerprint ---------------------------- < 15 28 DF 78 67 98 B2 16 1F D3 FD C5 59 D4 B6 78 46 1C EE 56 >

OK, a little terminology KDE = the K Desktop Environment. It's what manages your windows, and stuff XDM = the X Display Manager KDM = the K Display Manager, a KDE version of XDM, but the differences are largely in look&feel, not in protocol. In fact, the underlying source is to a great extent just copied from XDM. XDMCP is the XDM Control Protocol, which is what XDM uses when handling remote sessions, such as your thin client. Your NCD isn't "XDM" aware, it's "XDMCP" aware. and yes, KDM speaks XDMCP, so it should work
