You might try the hp printer section found in /usr/share/doc/packages/ Richard wrote:
Recently I updated my 8.1 via YOU. Prior to the update the printer had been working famously. Much better than the 'other' printer thingie. I have been tryint for four days now to get it working again. I have ininstalled and reinstalled three separate times via yast2 and I even went in and uninstalled each printer file then reinstalled by hand. So far nothing has worked.
I have followed the YAST2 printer uninstall/reinstall religiously. and still no printer.
I use an HP840C via USB.
Following yast printer reinstall, at the dialog for USB printer connection I click TEST PRINTER CONNECTION and it outputsHello World to the printer. At the next dialog I select the printer name=lp with make and model = HP84C. At the next Configuration dialog I have selected the HPijs, cdj500 , color HPijs, color 300 cdj880, and color 300 cdj550 drivers. I have clicked the 'Test Grapical Printers" and Test Text Printers. NOTHING!
When CUPS was working I had selected the monochrome for lp and color hpijs drivers. Now it is dead.
So I look at the ~/cups/error log messages and i see:

As I look back up the list I do not see any "Permission denied" messages or SIGTERMs before Oct 27 or so. Any suggestions or must I reinstall 8.1 so I can print again?? This would make the third time I would have to reinstall to recover from some idiotic thing done by YAST2. One day all is working ok, the next it's a pile of crap. It's frustrating as hell! I just went through this same thing with my wife;s machine, only reinstalling via Yast, then setting up the printer through the Print manager, worked fine.
Why does printing have to be such a goat fuck with Linux? Why so much black magic for such a simple task? If I were a drinking man still, I would go get drunk.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Yes, I have been Reading The FMs and they are indeed Fm's, Big F, little m. Is my frustration obvious?? I had a simple one page letter to print and I had to go back to windows to do it. That should not happen after all these many years of development.
Help anyone????
