CUPS printer failed completely, almost, after updates via YOU
Recently I updated my 8.1 via YOU. Prior to the update the printer had been working famously. Much better than the 'other' printer thingie. I have been tryint for four days now to get it working again. I have ininstalled and reinstalled three separate times via yast2 and I even went in and uninstalled each printer file then reinstalled by hand. So far nothing has worked. I have followed the YAST2 printer uninstall/reinstall religiously. and still no printer. I use an HP840C via USB. Following yast printer reinstall, at the dialog for USB printer connection I click TEST PRINTER CONNECTION and it outputsHello World to the printer. At the next dialog I select the printer name=lp with make and model = HP84C. At the next Configuration dialog I have selected the HPijs, cdj500 , color HPijs, color 300 cdj880, and color 300 cdj550 drivers. I have clicked the 'Test Grapical Printers" and Test Text Printers. NOTHING! When CUPS was working I had selected the monochrome for lp and color hpijs drivers. Now it is dead. So I look at the ~/cups/error log messages and i see: [31/Oct/2002:17:18:48 -0600] Job 1 queued on 'y2test' by 'root'. Any suggestions or must I reinstall 8.1 so I can print again?? This would make the third time I would have to reinstall to recover from some idiotic thing done by YAST2. One day all is working ok, the next it's a pile of crap. It's frustrating as hell! I just went through this same thing with my wife;s machine, only reinstalling via Yast, then setting up the printer through the Print manager, worked fine. Why does printing have to be such a goat fuck with Linux? Why so much black magic for such a simple task? If I were a drinking man still, I would go get drunk. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Yes, I have been Reading The FMs and they are indeed Fm's, Big F, little m. Is my frustration obvious?? I had a simple one page letter to print and I had to go back to windows to do it. That should not happen after all these many years of development. Help anyone????
You might try the hp printer section found in /usr/share/doc/packages/ Richard wrote:

As I look back up the list I do not see any "Permission denied" messages or SIGTERMs before Oct 27 or so.

When you add printers, you need to use a different printer name. Like lp = lp0 = grayscale 300 dpi draft lp1 = grayscale 600 dpi lp2 = color 300 dpi draft etc etc. Also check /etc/cups/printer.conf and make sure that your chosen printer has a STATE = IDLE ACCEPTING=yes. When a failure occurs on a printer, like if you turn off power during a print, the file halts the printer by adjusting the above variables. You need to manually fix it sometimes. There are a couple of nice gtk apps for cups, gtklp and gtklpq -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Zentara, I had them set up correctly as lp & lpcolor, Then when all stopped working I deleted all and tried to get just one working using various combinations. Nothing worked! That's when I stated deleting and reinstalling all the printer files. Still no luck. I even tried the Hp OfficeJet drivers on the off chance they might do something, yet - nothing so far.

This file is as it should be.

Not only did I turn it off, I unplugged the AC and the USB cables, just to be sure. Nothing helped.

I will download and look at your suggested apps. I'm getting desperate to get my printer back. When I worked on computers in a former life, we used to hang chicken bones around. Of course we all knew it helped. I'm ready to go kill a bunch of chickens or maybe penquins if that would help get my printer back. Anyway, Thanks for the advice. Do you have any other suggestions? Why not just delete /etc/cups and then go thru the whole yast2 printer setup again? If that don't work, it might be a hardware or usb problem. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
whole yast2 printer setup again? If that don't work, it might be a hardware or usb problem. Well, that didnt do anything, If I switch to windows it works fine. and

KDE doesn't have anything to do with how CUPS behaves. B. There are 2 major security flaws in any KDE version below 3.0.4 so not upgrading is a bad thing. Ben, That is nice to know. I didnt reinstall KDE, I reinstalled the whole thing.. The printer came up and printed the test stuff and all looked will until I enabled inetd and the cupd server. Now nothing!. Disabling inetd doesnt help. Now when I try the print manager I get an error saying can;t write to the printer file. I'm going hunting for some penguin bones. There ought to be a reasonable explanation for the troubles I am having. Maybe it's all the rain we're having in Texas. Thanks for the info, Ben. Any suggestions other than a .45 through the mobo? I read somewhere about a bug with cups and kde. After installing my printer via cups/yast2 I had to go into kde and delete it from there. I have an epson 880 via USB. When I installed it via yast2 it created several profiles: lp, color, best, [some others]. All of them worked except for the "lp" So, I went into kde control panel, changed to 'administrator mode' and saw that all of the profiles were listed, but had no infomation listed below. All of them printed test page ok, except the 'lp' which had a ! mark indicating a problem. I just deleted the profile and reinstalled it via kde options, then it worked. Before I fixed it I could not print from anything, including the command line (unless I sent the command line as "lp -d best" or another profile). Hopefully, it might help some. -jeric

Clutching at straws, but CUPS appears to use port 631 even for internal printing. I suppose you don't have that blocked by your firewall? Cheers, TonyB
