Is it possible to update from 7.1 to 8.1??
Yes, I just did that exact upgrade last night, and there were remarkably few problems. Others on the list have suggested saving conf files. Routinely I just recursively copy all of /etc into a safe place, and after the upgrade I do "diff -r -w /etc /home/upgrade/etc > /tmp/etc.diff" and then slog through it, either recreating local hacks or deciding to junk them.
I have a linux box (SuSE 7.1). My attempt here is trying to update my linuxbox to SuSE 8.1 which I downloaded to the hard drive from FTP site. But it does not let me update the version from the directory that files are located by saying "Can not find the image. Check the directory specification" under source medium selection.
If I remember correctly, the dirname it wants to see is the one labelled "8.1" on the FTP site. (You may have put it in a differently named directory on your own machine.) The "image" it wants, I think, is .../8.1/boot/root. Try adding and subtracting components until it's satisfied. And it will want ALL the stuff including, specifically, the lists of packages; otherwise it will complain "no package lists; cannot make proposal". James F.
